Simple Toys
January 2016-February 2017 | Beijing, China
Design of a wooden toys collection for Mochen Architects brand Ruralscape.
Designing toys
has always been a dream of mine: as a bit of a dreamer and storyteller I always
find beauty in the most simple objects, and I believe old-style wooden toys are
full of it.
The initial idea for the toys was to create something with a “nostalgic”
feeling to it, “old style” toys, not digitalized, that would let the children
be imaginative and creative, which is the ultimate purpose of playing.
Designing and creating is a little bit like dreaming: you are given something,
a thought, a task, and you create endless realities, possibilities out of it.
The entire collection is based on the fact that each piece can be combined in
different ways, according to what each kid is feeling like when he is playing
with them.
The material is wood, a natural material that feels good when touched and
handled, and that also looks beautiful when the toys are “resting” on the
shelf: combined with soft pastel colors, the overall look of the toys is
calming: they are meant to evoke and stimulate the player’s imagination and
creativity rather than overwhelm him.
The character of the toys is at the same time fun and playful: based on funny
illustrations, the toys are in their own way telling a story just by sitting on
the desk or on the shelf.
These toys aren’t only for children: thanks to their nostalgic character,
they also attract adults that see how this kind of object can stay in their
family for generations.
The collection features a series of three vehicles (in two sizes) that share the same body and which parts are connected magnetically: they are vehicles and puzzles at the same time. The second series is one of spinning tops, that are placed upside down on a podium to create a nice village or wood scene. The last design is for a wooden block with an architectural spin to it: the “wooden bricks” can be placed together to create endless straight or curvy walls, and can also be used like dominos.
I have created the entire collection, its identity, branding, photographs and marketing material, packaging, and personally visited the factory.
The toys are now on sale in design shops and online in China.

Beijing Florascape entrance gate
March-June 2014| Mochen Architects Beijing | Architect in Charge
Design of an entrance gate and fence for a plant nursery in Beijing Shunyi.
The company, a plant nursery, wanted an entrance gate with a design that strongly represent their identity. The proposal combines a strong design element (the weathering steel) with their products: plants and flowers. The entire gate is a big and linear vase, meant to host the plants: due to the characteristics of the material, the changing of the seasons will be seen both on the plants and on the weathering steel.
